Are you thinking about starting a gaming channel on YouTube? There’s a really great community of video game vloggers, game developers and creators, and game critics out there creating cool videos on YouTube, and you could be a part of it.
Before you start a gaming channel, though, you should first ask yourself these nine questions and answer them very honestly. With these answers, you’ll be able to get off to a great start on YouTube as you create your gaming vlogs.
Why Am I Starting a YouTube Gaming Channel?
Are you starting a gaming YouTube channel because you love gaming? Or are you starting a channel because it seems like it could be successful and it might make you some money? Both? There’s nothing wrong with making money with your dreams, but don’t start a YouTube channel on things that you’re not passionate about. If you answered yes to the first question we just asked, you’re on the right track. It’s important to ask yourself why you’re creating a gaming channel. This will help you build an effective plan, and provide a clear vision on what needs to be done.
How Much Time Will I Dedicate Per Day/Week
Are you ready to devote a little bit of time every day to your YouTube channel? Filming a YouTube video only takes so much time, but if you want it to be high quality, you’ll need to edit it, which takes more time. You’ll also need to spend time promoting your gaming channel on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and/or Google+.
You’ll also need to devote some time to checking your YouTube analytics, researching keywords, branding your channel, networking with other gamers, and increasing your views and subscriptions through tweaks to your content and structure.
Set a specific amount of time that you will dedicate to your YouTube channel and relevant tasks per day/week.
What Will I Do to Effectively Manage That Time?
Time management is key for success. You can increase your productivity dramatically just by sitting down and planning out a weekly schedule for filming videos, social media marketing, editing videos, networking with other YouTube gamers, and much more.
You can also implement other time management tools, like alarms to remind you that you need to work on something for your channel. If you’re dedicated to creating and maintaining a gaming channel, you should be able to determine what your time management strengths are and how you’ll use them to stay on schedule with tasks to help your YouTube channel.
Who Is My Gaming Audience on YouTube?
Are you making gaming videos aimed at veteran gamers who read every bit of news and information on the games you play or discuss before they hit the shelves? Or are you creating videos for people who are casual gamers or just getting into gaming? Knowing your audience will help you tailor your content and choose where you’ll focus your marketing attention, too.
How Will I Reach My Audience?
Speaking of focusing your marketing attention, do you know where your audience hangs out online? Check out gaming forums, Facebook groups, Google+ communities, and other online discussion groups related to gaming and the genre(s) of games you discuss in your YouTube videos. Get involved in these communities, and you’ll be on your way to engaging and interacting with your audience and gaining a wider fan base.
What Steps Will I take to Grow My Audience?
If you really want to grow your audience, you’ll need to not only reach out to them but also to other YouTube gamers. You can grow your audience by collaborating with other YouTubers in the gaming community with collab videos, shout-outs, mentions, and channel url exchanges. They’ll get exposure from your viewers, and you’ll get exposure from theirs.
You can also reach out to gaming publications both on and offline. Write guest blogs or columns for these publications, and you’ll start to set yourself up as someone who has valuable thoughts and strategies to share with the community. Add a link to your YouTube gaming channel in your author bio, and readers will quickly become viewers and subscribers.
What are My Short-Term YouTube Goals?
Making a list of short-term goals will help you keep perspective and reach your long-term goals. Think about how many views and subscriptions you want for your channel within the first month. Set a goal for how many followers you want on social media, how many gaming videos you want to have uploaded in the first six months, how many comments and likes you want to average per video on YouTube etc,
What are My Long-Term Goals?
Do you want to become a full-time YouTuber? Would you be happy with making a bit of supplemental income each month? How many YouTube subscribers do you want by next year? When you think of these long-term goals, link them with your short-term goals and see what the big picture looks like.
What Steps Will I Take to Reach Those Goals?
How much time and attention you give your gaming channel really depends a lot on what your short- and long-term goals are. If you want to be a famous YouTube gamer and quit your job, you’ll need to do a lot more than if you just want to casually make videos about the games you like to play. In either case, though, you should set a solid schedule of tasks to link together your short-term goals into stepping-stones to get to your long-term goals.
Setting out to become a successful YouTube gamer can seem intimidating when you look at it as a whole. However, if you sit down and make a plan, you’ll notice that your smaller goals lead to your ultimate goals and that they can each be broken down into specific, easy steps and tasks. And you’ll find, having answered these questions, that you have most of what you need to lay out a plan to complete those tasks. Use your answers to these questions to build your plan for creating and maintaining your YouTube gaming channel, and above all else, have fun and be consistent!
