Starting a channel on YouTube is easy. Setting up a YouTube gaming channel that will grow with an engaged audience and get the results you want…well, that’s a bit more in-depth. After all, starting a channel really isn’t much more complicated than creating a Google account and signing in to YouTube.
Fortunately, you don’t have to be a YouTube guru to set your gaming channel up for success, and you don’t have to rely on luck, either. Here’s seven things to keep in mind, as you make YouTube gaming videos and maintain your channel.
Create a Channel Plan for Your Goal(s) as a Gamer
First and foremost, don’t try to wing it. Have you ever seen a truly successful business that didn’t start with a vision, goals, and a plan? Think of your YouTube gaming channel as your own business that you want to get off the ground and running successfully. Then create a road map that will get you from where you are now to where you want to be in a few weeks, months, and years.
Start by figuring out your long-term goal for your gaming channel. Do you want it to be a fun hobby and nothing more? Do you want to use it to make some extra income on the side? Once you’ve decided what your long-term goal is, start figuring out some short-term goals and milestones that will help you reach it.
As you fill these in, start to set even shorter-term goals (weekly) to help you reach those. Before you know it, you’ll have a set channel plan that will show you what you need to do each day and week to succeed in your goals for each month and year.
Make Audience Interaction an Important Priority
Next, as you start to work on your channel, don’t just make YouTube gaming videos and upload them. Make interacting with your viewers a real priority. Start by adding calls to action at the ends of your videos. Ask your viewers to leave comments about their thoughts on your content, and encourage them to leave their ideas for future YouTube gaming videos.
Then, don’t ignore the comments – both on YouTube and on your channel’s social media pages. When your viewers leave comments, be sure to respond to them!
And don’t just say “Yes” or “No.” Communicate as if you’re speaking to your friends.
It’s understandable if you don’t have enough time to respond to all your comments, but taking the time to consistently have a conversation with your audience is one of the best things you can do as a YouTube gamer for long-term success
Create Pathways to Your YouTube Gaming Channel
Don’t just rely on Google and YouTube searches for views, either. Whenever you upload a new gaming video, be sure to post links to it on your social media pages. Whenever possible, you should also consider contributing to relevant gaming sites, blogs and magazines, and have your YouTube channel mentioned or linked in your bio.
The more links you have to your YouTube gaming videos, channel, and playlists online, the more pathways people will have to find your channel and watch your videos. This will help increase your exposure and grow your audience.
Use Playlists to Group Together Relevant Gameplay
In most cases, you won’t always make YouTube videos about the same games, so your viewers might have some trouble searching through your channel for gameplay videos that they’re interested in the most. You can make this easier on them and increase your views by making playlists for different games, genres, and/or types of videos you’ve uploaded.
For example, you could make a playlist of all of your Call of Duty videos, one for your Minecraft videos, one for your blooper reels, and one for your most popular videos. When you group your YouTube gaming videos this way, you can give every audience member exactly what they want without making them dig through your channel to find what they were looking for.
Plus, because YouTube playlists will start the next video automatically, you’re more likely to get more views with them, as well.
Strive to Become an Authority Source
If you set yourself up as an authority in your gaming niche, people will keep coming back to watch your reviews, tutorials, and play-throughs. This means staying up to date on gaming news and talking about the latest games, trends, events, and other industry news in your YouTube gaming videos.
Keep an eye on the latest in regards to the world of gaming, and don’t hesitate to talk about relevant topics in your videos. Your YouTube channel will gain more authority as a leader in the space, and people will keep coming back to see what you have to say and hear you give your own take on things.
Consistently Brand Your YouTube Gaming Videos
Along with getting people to come back to your gaming channel for more content, you also want them to associate your videos with your channel’s brand whenever they see them shared on social media and embedded in other sites. That’s why branding is so important.
For example, a simple way to brand your content is to use an in-video graphic of your logo at the beginning of your YouTube videos and/or add a watermark of your logo in one corner of your content.
You can also add in-video graphics of your branded hashtag, and don’t forget that you can brand your background with a banner or poster, too. It’s important to brand your channel and its content as a gamer on YouTube.
It’s a YouTube Gaming Community, Not Competition
Lastly, avoid looking at other YouTubers in the gaming space as competition. You may have watched their videos before you started your YouTube channel, and you probably still may watch some of them today. View those gamers as members of your community. Connect with those in similar gaming niches. See if you can find a way to collaborate and grow your communities together because collaborations are the best way to get more views and subscribers on YouTube.
Keep these seven tips in mind to help set up your YouTube gaming channel for success.
