If you talk to other vloggers or watch videos on their YouTube channels, you’re very likely going to hear mentions of YouTube collaborations, and you might be wondering what they’re talking about. A YouTube collaboration is any collaborative effort made by two or more vloggers on YouTube to gain more exposure and grow their audience by working together.
Why YouTube Collaborations are Effective
Collaborations are some of the most effective marketing strategies that new (and established) YouTubers can use to get more views and more subscribers. They work because, essentially, when you collaborate with another YouTuber who has a similar audience, the two of you can both double your reach for at least one video.
YouTube collaborations give you instant exposure to a much larger audience, overall. Whether you create a video together, do guest appearances, guest vlogs, or just give each other shout-outs, you can both benefit a great deal from working together.
Examples of YouTube Collaborations
Now, you’re probably wondering how you can collaborate with another YouTuber to grow your audience. There are actually quite a few options, some of which are a little bit more involved than others, but they are all very effective.
Guest Appearances – Appear as a guest in one of another YouTuber’s vlogs. They can interview you about what you do and how you add to the vlogging community, or the two of you could discuss your views on a relevant topic to your viewers. You can even trade guest appearances to boost both of your YouTube channels. Plus, guest appearances have never been easier now that you can record and add Google Hangouts to your YouTube channel.
Make a Collab Video – You could also create a video together. You’ll work together on this collab video, and then you’ll both upload parts of the video to your separate channels and link to each other in your video descriptions. It’s really important to encourage your viewers to view the other part(s) on your partner’s YouTube channel through a call to action at the end of each video.
Guest Vlogs – Sometimes, it can be difficult to get together to create a YouTube collab video. Google Hangouts make it a lot easier to do guest appearances and round tables, but it’s not quite the same as making a video together. As an alternative, you can each make your own video and then swap them and upload each other’s video to your YouTube channels.
This works well if your YouTube channels’ topic areas are similar and relevant. Don’t forget to write a really good introduction in the video description. You should also promote your guest vlog in your other videos leading up to them.
Exchange Mentions – Finally, the easiest way to collaborate is to simply exchange mentions and shout-outs in each other’s YouTube videos. In the outro to your video, along with thanking your fans for watching, you can say something like, “And, if you like what I have to say about these topics, check out my friend [username]’s amazing vlogs! She uploads all kinds of interesting, related material that you’ll love!”
Then add a link to your collab partner’s YouTube channel in the description or in an annotation link on your video. They’ll do the same for you, and you’ll both get more views from interested audience members looking for more fun and informative content that they’re interested in.
Any of these ideas can work for you and your partner (or partners) for a YouTube collaboration. They’ll all help bring more viewers to your YouTube channel and to your collaborator’s channel, too. As we said earlier, some involve more effort than others, and being in close proximity to each other does help with creating a collab video together. However, even just by giving each other shout-outs and exchanging channel links, you can create more exposure for each other.
Find a Collab Partner with Similar Interests
If you’re going to do a collaboration video or vlog, you need to make sure that your partner creates content similar to your own. For example, if one YouTuber has a gaming channel, and the other does make up tutorials, you are going to have a lot of trouble finding common ground. Instead, find a collaboration partner who makes YouTube videos relevant to your viewers’ interests.
It’s very appealing to find a YouTube collaboration partner with 500,000 subscribers and hope that they will do a collab with you. But if you have around 5000 subscribers, it may not work out for both sides.
We can all agree that aside from having fun, the ultimate objective of collaborations is to gain exposure to a new audience. This means acquiring new viewers, subscribers, followers, and etc. But if your level of exposure is extremely mismatched to your prospective collab partner, they may not be interested in a collaboration.
Someone Who Works Hard
You need your prospective partner to meet deadlines and complete the required tasks. If you want to make a YouTube collaboration work, you’re going to need a partner who will work hard at the project with you. If you’re going to end up doing 99% of the work, it isn’t a well-suited partnership.
Be absolutely certain that you are working with someone on this collaboration that will bring as much to the table as you intend to.
Be Clear on Your Intentions from The Get-Go
It isn’t totally uncommon for a collaboration effort to fail. So it’s very important from the onset that both of you agree to a schedule and clearly understand who is responsible for doing what. This is especially true if you and your partner live at a distance and cannot record the video together in the same space.
Once you have both agreed to work together, set some expectations. If the collab partner that has agreed to work with you isn’t comfortable committing to specifics, chances are they may not be the right fit. It is better to understand and accept this before dedicating hours to this project.
Reaching Out to YouTubers for Collaborations
If you’ve identified a great prospective partner and haven’t yet made direct contact with them, connect through social media, email, blog comments, etc. Usually, an ideal collab partner has already watched and commented on a number of your YouTube videos, and vice versa. Let the person know that you admire their work, and you would like to discuss collaborating together on a video.
